Hanging on to History

Posted by
GJC (Kyoto, Japan) on 28 January 2013 in Cityscape & Urban.

Kyoto is famed throughout the world for its beauty and for its history. In truth, that history -- particularly in the downtown area -- is destroyed at a frightening pace. Old wooden townhouses throughout the city are regularly bulldozed, often making way for small narrow parking lots that on average can fit only four or five cars. This seems like a bad trade to me: a beautiful old home for five cars. In this photo we see a resident still hanging on despite the encroaching parking spaces and the big modern structures.

This week I will show a few shots of houses and traditional structures trying to survive amidst their modern urban setting.
