Sunday was the annual Doll Festival, a wonderful celebration for families with girls. My wife's parents set out a gorgeous display of dolls in traditional court costume and we offered them some sweets, a special kind of rice and a cake as well. They seemed as pleased as we were. Today and tomorrow I will post some photos of the dolls. I didn't bring my tripod (too heavy, along with all the baby things we needed) so I had to do the best I could hand-held in very low light.
This doll is one of the five musicians who play for the emperor and empress doll (not in the photo) who sit at the very top of a seven-step display. He is playing a small hand drum called a kotsuzumi (小鼓).
