Why I Became a Photographer

Posted by
GJC (Kyoto, Japan) on 18 November 2011 in Abstract & Conceptual and Portfolio.

This scene -- these very doors -- is why I began photography. This temple is not far from my workplace and in passing by it in the late afternoon I was so often overwhelmed by the beautiful way that the light played across its surface that I decided I had to try to take a photo of what it looks like at just that moment when the sun comes across just like that. But more than that, I wanted to take a photo of what it feels like. Thousands of photos of similar scenes later, I still can't resist. It is to me the very essence, the spiritual home of my photography. Though there are others more famous, more beautiful and more inspiring, this temple will always be a special place for me because of the world these doors have opened for me.
