Fall Harvest

Posted by
GJC (Kyoto, Japan) on 7 October 2011 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

Several years ago I was talking to a woman harvesting rice by hand (you can see that photo here) and I said that it must be much better now that machines could harvest the rice without such painful and tedious labor. She admitted that the machines were faster, but told me that in many ways it was more fun when it was all done by hand. The schools were let out and the whole community came to the fields and harvested the rice together, she said, and there was lots of chatter and songs and laughter to go along with the hard labor.

You will still see people like this woman harvesting by hand because the machines don't do well around the field's outer corners and edges, and so every year starting around the last weeks of September you will still find people bent over and cutting the golden stalks with a curved knife and skilled hands before giving way to the machines.

This is a wonderful photograph. I like the composition, and how she is holding the stalks, her bent form mirroring the curve of the stalks, the women dark and the rice bright. We lose community and continuity by not doing it the old way, at least doing it that way some of the time. The children probably learned more by joining in the harvest than they would have spending those days in school.
