I want to thank everyone for their really thoughtful comments and discussion on the last photo I posted. I have always been inspired by the beauty of the small-scale farms in this area of Kyoto, and by the perseverance of the folks who keep them going. I rarely see anyone who is younger than 70 out in the field, and yet they work much harder than I do. They have helped me appreciate more than ever the bounty that comes to my table, and also to value the land.
A constant theme running through my work is an appreciation for ways of living with the land, something I think traditional Japanese architecture and these human-scaled farms in the north of Kyoto manage to do in inspiring ways.
