To the Emperor's Gate

Posted by
GJC (Kyoto, Japan) on 5 April 2011 in Architecture and Portfolio.

This is a bridge leading to a wide path up to the Kenreimon gate (建礼門) on the south side of the Old Imperial Palace. In the past the Emperor was the only one who could use this gate. It leads to another large vermillion gate (you can see its tiled roof in this photo just stretching out behind the Emperor's gate) and then to a large courtyard headed by the Shishinden (紫宸殿), the Great Hall of State Ceremonies (you can just see its brown cypress roof rising up above the Kenreimon gate).
