Winter Solstice Bamboo

Posted by
GJC (Kyoto, Japan) on 29 December 2010 in Plant & Nature.

I took this on the night of the Winter Solstice (Tōji in Japanese; 冬至). It is said that if on this day you eat Japanese squash, called kabocha, and take a hot bath into which you put the citrus fruit called yuzu, you will not catch a cold in the winter. I, however, was too busy to do either, because I was outside freezing on the staircase of the apartment building where I live, trying to get this photo.
