Neighborhood Festival

Posted by
GJC (Kyoto, Japan) on 13 November 2010 in Cityscape & Urban.

I came on this festival quite unexpectedly while I was exploring an area of downtown I had never yet visited. That is one of the beauties of life in Kyoto: simply walking out the door every day guarantees you will see something interesting.
This was a festival for Tendo Shrine (天道神社) and here we see as they are just lifting up the beautiful palanquin (called a mikoshi; 神輿) in which the god of the neighborhood rides around to see the people of his district once a year.
