満開

Posted by
GJC (Kyoto, Japan) on 8 April 2010 in Plant & Nature.

When the sakura are at their very peak, you will hear, as countless people look up at the trees in delight: "mankai!" (満開!). It means "full bloom," but more than that it also expresses the ethereal feeling of standing in the presence of something so utterly perfect, as if it were not the flowers but one's very soul that is caught up in this fleeting moment of mankai.
