The first cherry blossom festival at Hirano Shrine was begun by the Emperor Kazan (花山天皇) in the year 985. You can see why people keep coming back.

This is great. The colorful structure in the background, not quite obscured, reminds me of those old colorblindness tests. What number is hidden in this circle?

You are right....cherry blossoms (as well as ume) make the best impression in company with temple architecture. The mon behind the tree is complementing the flowers.
