In olden times many traditional structures like this were covered in thin sheets of wood siding, but modern fire code regulations have meant the widespread use of corrugated metal like this. While I prefer the old wooden siding, I have often found this metal to be a wonderfully expressive medium itself. You can see some other examples here and here.
