Dreams of Miyako (都の夢想), 2

Posted by
GJC (Kyoto, Japan) on 9 March 2009 in People & Portrait.

Here is another photo that barely survived the Great Delete of 2009 -- my attempt to free up space by getting rid of photos from 2008 that I have, often for reasons I honestly can't understand, never gotten around to deleting. Taken about a year ago at Shimogamo Shrine (下鴨神社) of two Shinto shrine attendants called "miko" (巫女).

Panasonic DMC-FX30 1/8 second F/5.6 ISO 200 100 mm (35mm equiv.)

Oh, why would you delete this? I'm glad it escaped! I love the stillness of the temple and the motion of these people, and how bright the red is, and the parasols. It feels like, from the point of view of the temple, life rushes past, always brightly coloured, but it stays still and proud.

Voted, BTW :) Bonne chance!

Fabulous capture of the movement, good thing you never deleted it as it can take many shots to capture it as well if you would have intended to

This is beautiful and very colorful. I think you just store those questionable images on DVD rather than deleting them.

Awesome work! That long exposure make those two figure become more graphical, more like reflections of one another.
Very nice work, hard to stop enjoying this frame :P

Punchy color and a pretty shot. The umbrellas look like it's floating.

THANK YOU! For not deleting this, GJC! I love the capture of motion in this shot, and the red of their kimonos (?) add so much to this capture.

I like the blur of the moving "miko". The red skirt and traditionnal umbrellas are really nice.
Thank's for your answer. With digital photography it is easy to take a lot of pictures and if you don't throw away the bad ones or don't make the choice between similar pictures you end with too many pictures and a futur search to find a picture will be more difficult... Personnally I only keep the good ones (jpeg) and also nearly all the raw files of edited pictures (the best ones).

Wonderful duo - and the blur makes them more alike and it is the “repletion” that makes the image come alive. Splendid color also!

Love the sense of movement, as if they are twirling around (maybe they are). The red in the building, and in their clothes, and in the reflections bring a lovely unity to the piece.
