Storehouse, Late Afternoon

Posted by
GJC (Kyoto, Japan) on 1 October 2008 in Architecture.

This month's challenge to myself is to take as many horizontal photos as I can. As I wrote for an earlier post, I instantly favor the vertical format when I'm composing so I am trying to see compositions in horizontal as well. Not, perhaps, the most difficult challenge to give myself, but still something I want to try. We shall see how I do, but this is a start.

Great project, I love how you enhanced the horizontal by taking it next to a perpendicular-type block...you have a good eye ;)

Good contrast between deep blue sky and warm wall
Nice framing too :)

Yeah, I am noticing you favor portrait more than landscape format. Both have its rule of thumb and challenges. This is a well-framed shot with layers of color, contrast, and depth.

if it goes against what you are most comfortable doing than it is a challenge indeed.

I like the simple lines and geometric shapes here.

Interesting as I tend to want to Landscape landscapes..I'm intrigued as to why you feel more cofortable in Portrait mode for non-portrait photographs.

i like these lines.
i used to almost automatically favor a horizontal orientation. then i got a camera (fuji gs645) where the view was vertical unless the camera was turned. i started taking lots more vertical shots...i think it's good to switch things around every now and then.

Just curious, is the slight curve in the reveal (at the bottom) from lens or is it actually there?

I love the blue of this sky- did you push the saturation at all?

Lovely composition and contrast of colours. A good idea for a personal challenge. I tend to focus on the horizontal, I'll have to try to take a few more vertical shots.

This is a classic GJC image. Simple, strong shapes and lines, superb graphic design. Setting little goals for ourselves as photographers is a great way to grow.
