Taken at Yasaka Shrine, as a wedding party lines up behind a shrine maiden who will escort them to the hall for the ceremony before the goddess Amaterasu.

@Veronique: Thank you. Yes, our wedding was at this very same shrine, and we began our married life walking behind a woman dressed just like this, and under that red umbrella.

Your photos intrigue me, and for someone whom I suspect was not born and raised in Japan, your love for the country and traditions are so evident. This wedding shot (and any with the red umbrella) must be invigorating since it is a reminder of your own.

@Judy aka L@dybug: Thank you (as always) for your kind comment. Indeed, I was not born and raised in Japan, but came here later. My enthusiasm for this country (or at least Kyoto, which I know best) derives from the respect shown for tradition and how well sacred spaces integrate into everyday spaces. It has been an enormous privilege to live here.
