Here is a larger view of the palanquins featured in yesterday's shot. From this angle we see only one of what were actually three palanquins on view before the festival. Normally they are kept in storage and are only put on display right before the yearly festival. You also see large barrels of sake (rice wine) on the right and there are also wooden stands holding offerings as well.

The writing on the lanterns is to signify the name of the person or business that gave money to buy the lantern.
