Mid-Afternoon Quiet, Sudo Shrine (崇道神社)Posted by GJC (Kyoto (京都), Japan) on 10 April 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture. I realize that the light was a little too strong in the trees (taken at about 1:00 in the afternoon after all) so it's a little blown out and the exposure a little odd, but I post this anyway just because I liked the scene and the atmosphere and I wanted to share it with you. The "lion-dog" on the left, called a "komainu" (狛犬) in Japanese, is one of a pair. The two are very commonly found at opposing sides of an entrance to Shinto shrines, there to stand guard for the gods whom we are approaching.
