Flowers of Miyako (都の花)Posted by GJC (Kyoto, Japan) on 16 January 2009 in People & Portrait. Welcome back to Kyoto. I took this some time ago but never got around to posting it. I thought it would make a good entry back to Kyoto after Europe. These aren't real maiko (舞妓, apprentice geisha), by the way, but young Japanese tourists who go to a special make-up studio and then walk around historic parts of Kyoto and take pictures of themselves. Many tourists mistake them for real maiko and though they don't have much of a real maiko's grace, well, it's all good fun and the kimono are certainly delightful enough.
